Queen Elizabeth II : King Charles arrives at Buckingham Palace

King Charles III has arrived at Buckingham Palace in the last few moments to enormous cheers from onlookers.

He entered through the Garden Gate ahead of a number of engagements later this afternoon.

Charles could be seen waving to people through the car windows.

At 2pm, the King will receive Commonwealth general secretary Patricia Scotland in the 1844 Room of Buckingham Palace.

Then, half an hour later, he will attend a reception with Realm High Commissioners in the Bow Room.

At 3.30pm, the King will receive the Dean of Windsor in the 1844 Room.

It is understood the Queen’s cortege has made a scheduled stop to re-fuel – and for the drivers of the procession to rest.

They are three hours into what was expected to be a six-hour journey from Balmoral to the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.

The procession halted near Brechin in Angus – 88 miles from Edinburgh.

Below is a reminder of the journey the hearse will take…

Following the main proclamation ceremony in London on Saturday, towns and cities across the UK have held their own events today to mark King Charles III’s accession to the throne.
