Queen Elizabeth II : Monarch’s coffin on journey to Edinburgh

The Queen’s coffin makes the first step in its journey to London as it travels from Balmoral to Edinburgh today. It comes after King Charles III was formally proclaimed monarch at St James’s Palace yesterday, and his two sons surprised people with a joint walkabout in Windsor.

Mourners threw white flowers at the hearse carrying the Queen’s coffin as it travelled through the village of Ballater in Aberdeenshire on Sunday morning. It is worth noting that the public have been asked not to throw flowers at passing vehicles during the Queen’s cortege today. The Royal Family has shared a poignant image of the Queen’s coffin cortege leaving Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire this morning.

In a short message, it says: “Her Majesty The Queen’s coffin has left Balmoral.  “Accompanied by The Princess Royal and Sir Tim Laurence, the cortege will travel to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.”

Thousands of people have lined the streets of Scotland this morning as the Queen’s funeral cortege departs Balmoral on its way to Edinburgh. The trip will take six hours, passing through Aberdeen and Dundee.

At the moment, the procession – accompanied by Princess Anne – is in Banchory in Aberdeenshire. Mourners applauded the hearse as it passed through the town.

Police and Whitehall insiders have provided an insight into what the capital could look like in the coming days. The Queen’s coffin will arrive in London on a flight on Tuesday, accompanied by her daughter the Princess Royal. The late monarch will then lie in state in Westminster Hall. It is thought that up to a million people will visit the coffin, the Sunday Times reports.

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police believes around two million people per day will gather on the streets of London. “It will be like the Notting Hill carnival every day,” a source said. A senior Whitehall insider added: “It is like trying to organise something on a similar scale to the London Olympics in a matter of days.” The Queen’s funeral will take place on Monday, 19 September.
